St Josaphat Nov 18 2012 : http://www.stjosaphatugcc.org/ Dear Cherished Guests, Allow me to welcome you to St Josaphat parish. As the pastor, let me take you on a personal guided tour of this great Church. Hopefully, this introduction will enable you to appreciate St. Josaphat Parish and the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. You may have noticed that our church looks a little different from most other Churches. Though we are in communion with the Pope of Rome, we do have a unique tradition that reflects both our Eastern (Orthodox) Byzantine heritage and our rich Ukrainian culture. It is within that mix that we find a wonderful path that leads us to experience the divine. The experience of heaven is the foundation of Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church traditions and architecture. This earthly experience of the heavenly is the very reason why St. Volodymyr the Great accepted the faith of the Byzantines in 988 AD. St. Nestor the chronicler wrote that when the grand prince Volodymyr wanted to unify his people with one common religion, he sent out emissaries to inquire about the religions of the world. When they returned, they all praised their appointed religions, but the emissary that returned from Byzantium reported that when he was in the Church of Hagia Sophia he did not know whether he was in heaven or on earth. And so the grand prince decided that this is what he wanted for his people – to live the rest of their days in heaven. This experience of the Heavenly Kingdom is actually a journey from the everyday world into the mystery of God, the Body of Christ and Heaven. To reflect this journey the Church is built in three sections, the vestibule, the nave and the sanctuary. The first part of the church as you walk in is called the vestibule, or the church of the catechumens. It is called the church of the catechumens for catechumens (adults preparing for baptism) had to undergo preparation and initiation before being allowed to face the awesome mystery celebrated in church at the Liturgy. In this section we prepare ourselves by leaving our earthly cares and worries behind so that we may be unencumbered by them as we enter to celebrate our communal experience of God. If we were to enter unprepared, then we would not be quite as open to accept the heavenly mystery of the church and liturgy. Duly prepared, we are now ready to enter into me main body of the church, the nave or the church of the faithful. The assembled faithful incarnate the body of Christ, therefore in the dome above this section there is a large icon of the Pantocrator, God the ruler and creator of all, which is as the head over the body. From the dome hangs a very ornate chandelier mat represents Christ, "the light of the world." Around this chandelier, on the "corona" there are two sets of icons, one set facing the light and the other turned outward. The icons facing the light are Old Testament prophets who prophesized the coming of Christ but were never able to see him, so now they are eternally bathed in His light. The icons facing outward are the apostles and disciples who were told to go forth and teach all nations. In me church of the faithful there are a myriad of icons – icons of the saints, prophets, apostles, martyrs. They pray with us at all times. To this day, every time I walk into our church, I still feel as though I am walking in the grandeur of heaven. I automatically feel surrounded by God and so many holy people gone before. Even when at a daily liturgy, when there is but a handful of parishioners present, the church is always full. This foretaste of heaven is important for it gives us the energy to continue our daily spiritual journey. Let us pause a moment to reflect upon the meaning icons and iconography. They are not solely meant to be historical pictures or just biblical illustrations, they are much more. As one Church Fathers described, they are theology in color. They are painted not in a natural style, but rather in an almost surreal style that reminds us of the transfiguration that we shall undergo by being touched by God. There is symbolism in the colors used. Red and gold are regal colors that denote the divine, and blue and green denote the human. We see in the icons of Christ we see me theology of the incarnation. Christ was divine – the red undergarment, and he took upon himself humanity – the blue cloak. The Mother of God, as with most of the saints, wears a blue undergarment - humanity, and a red cloak showing me sanctification and divinization that they underwent. Icons are meant to be contemplated, used as modes of communion with God. However, they are not worshipped. The reverence shown towards them is directed to the figures depicted. This is similar to a photograph of a loved one that we may kiss or contemplate when separated, it brings the two spiritually closer, though no one would confuse an image with reality. In the nave, where we together mystically form the Body of Christ, we are strengthened in for our journey by the icons, by the community, with the word of God and the Eucharist But our focus is drawn to the iconostas (icon screen) and what lies beyond it. The third section of the church is separated from the nave by the Iconostas. The nave represents me heavenly kingdom that was brought to us with the coming of Christ, even so, it is not perfect – the Sanctuary represents perfect heaven yet to come. As eastern Christians, we believe that the kingdom is with us, but that it's full realization is yet to come. The icons of Christ, the mother of God, and me saints on the iconostasis stand on me "border" of heaven and face the people, beckoning them on in their journey. You may still ask, so what does this all mean? The vestibule where we prepare ourselves, the nave where we get a foretaste of heavenly glory, and the sanctuary is our heavenly goal. The whole layout of the church symbolizes the journey of the Christian through Christ to the Heavenly Father. We move from the world, go through purification, enter into me body of Christ, and finally are transfigured in heavenly glory. This is the eternal heavenly procession. This is why the priest in our churches does not face the people, for he too is on this journey, he simply leads me faithful as a shepherd (pastor) leads his flock to Christ. Instead of the newer symbolism of the priest facing the faithful that emphasizes the community gathering around a table in prayer. Both symbols are rich and beautiful, simply different. The stress upon the experience of the divine and the heavenly leads the Byzantine churches, of which the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church is one, into symbolic maximalism. The whole psycho-somatic person is to be involved in this experience of divinization; to engage the spirit with all the bodily senses, not just human reason. The eyes feast upon the colorful icons, the nose smells the incense, the ears hear a beautifully sung Liturgy, we touch and kiss the icons, and we taste me Eucharist, which involves the use of leavened bread soaked in wine. The whole person is brought along in the journey that the princely envoy experienced over 1000 years ago. Strengthened by the experience of heaven, we are now able to return to the everyday world we left at the beginning of the journey. We return and share the Good News of Christ with others, building with love, forgiveness, compassion, justice and joy the heavenly kingdom on earth with God. Building this Heavenly Kingdom on earth first with our family, then our friends, community, nation and eventually the whole world is our mission. Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever! Fr. We believe that one must be saved by believing in Jesus as Lord and Savior for the forgiveness of sins and to be made acceptable to God. We believe in water baptism as an outward sign of conversion, and that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct spiritual experience that all who have believed in Jesus should receive. We also believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit accompanied initially by the outward evidence of speaking in tongues. We believe that the Bible is the absolute authority in matters of faith. Theologically, we are aligned with Evangelicalism in that they emphasize the reliability of the Bible and the need for the transformation of an individual's life with faith in Jesus. We believe that the Scriptures hold a special place in the Pentecostal worldview because the Holy Spirit is always active in the Bible. To encounter the Scriptures is to encounter God. The Scriptures are a primary reference point for communion with God and a template for reading the world. We believe that everyone who is genuinely saved has the Holy Spirit with them. But unlike most other Christians we believe that there is a second work of the Holy Spirit called the baptism of the Holy Spirit in which the Holy Spirit is now in believers, and which opens a believer up to a closer fellowship with the Holy Spirit and empowers them for Christian service. Speaking in tongues is the normative proof, but not the only proof, of the baptism with the Holy Spirit. The service is held primarily in Ukrainian. Most of the singing and speaking is in the Ukrainian language. However we have many Russians, Belarusian, and Polish people in our congregation as well. Anyone who does not speak the Ukrainian language is welcome to speak in their native tongue. We welcome all races and skin color, for we are all one family through Jesus Christ. Ukrainian National Credit Union Association Annual Meeting 2011 : UKRAINIAN NATIONAL CREDIT UNION ASSOCIATION HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING IN WARREN, MI (VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS AVAILABLE AT: http://www.youtube.com/user/selfrelianceUAFCU#p/u/0/8RbU3kWaGnc ) The Ukrainian National Credit Union Association (UNCUA) held its 30th Annual Meeting June 10-11, 2011 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren, Michigan. Forty participants representing thirteen Ukrainian American credit unions gathered to discuss current issues facing credit unions, to elect a new board of directors, and to celebrate Ukrainian Future Credit Union’s 50th anniversary at a banquet held Saturday, June 11. Friday afternoon the delegates were welcomed by representatives of Ukrainian Future CU: newly-elected Chair Anatoli Murha and Andrew Jakymowych, CEO/Treasurer. Greetings were then delivered by Bohdan Watral, then UNCUA Chair and CEO of Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal Credit Union (Chicago), and Ihor Laszok, President of the World Council of Ukrainian Cooperatives and Board Member of Selfreliance Ukrainian American FCU. Presentations on topics of interest to the credit union leaders followed. Bob Shibla, Strategic Advisor at Raddon Financial Group, spoke on credit union industry issues, John McKechnie, Senior Vice President at Total Spectrum based in Washington, DC, spoke on the relationship between credit unions and Congress and Steve Van Beek, Director of Regulatory Compliance at the National Association of Federal Credit Unions provided the delegates with an update on the latest compliance issues set forth by the National Credit Union Administration. Special guest speaker was Eugene Czolij, President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), who spoke on the "Ukrainian World Congress in Defense of the National Interests and Human Rights of Ukrainians". Afterwards, Mr. Czolij awarded several credit unions with UWC Presidents’ Club certificates for their contributions to the World Congress: Self Reliance New York FCU, SUMA Yonkers FCU, and Self Reliance (NJ) FCU in Clifton, NJ. The Association conducted its annual general meeting on Saturday, June 11th, with reports by management and committees, as well as the election of board members for the 2011-2012 term. UNCUA Chairman Bohdan Watral and President Orysia Burdiak reported on the current status of the Association. As of December 31, 2010, assets of the sixteen UNCUA member credit unions totaled $2.432 billion, with reserves and undivided earnings totaling $368 million. Member deposits totaled $2.052 billion, with $1.439 billion total loans issued in 2010. 104,155 individuals are members of Ukrainian American credit unions in the US (down by 1056 individuals from 2009). Despite the recession in 2010, Ukrainian American credit unions contributed near $4.4 million in support of community organizations, once again emphasizing the tremendous impact credit union membership has on the development of our Ukrainian American communities. The 2011 credit union calendar illustrating the decorative art of Ukraine known as Petrykivka was well received by the membership. Near 32,000 calendars were distributed to credit union members. Project coordinator was Lew Mykola Hryhorczuk, PhD, Vice-Chair of Ukrainian Selfreliance Michigan FCU, who has authored the calendars since 2008. On Saturday evening a banquet was held commemorating the 50th anniversary of Ukrainian Future Credit Union, attended by many Ukrainian clergy, and such distinguished guests as Ukrainian American State Representative (MI) Lesia Liss and Mayor of the City of Warren James Fouts. Representatives of UNCUA awarded Ukrainian Future with an honorary plaque commemorating their golden jubilee. The keynote address at the banquet was delivered by Eugene Czolij, who asserted that “Ukrainian credit unions are the basic financial support structures of our community life; I therefore call upon all Ukrainians to join an Ukrainian credit union, and in so doing contribute to their future stablility and capacity to provide ongoing support to our various Ukrainian organizations.” Mr. Czolij’s remarks were followed by entertainment provided by the CYM Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, which was received with tremendous applause and countless bravos for their outstanding performance. Сорок провідників 13-ти українських кредитівок у США зібралися, щоб обговорити сучасний стан і працю кооперативного руху і вибрати новий провід. Чергові збори ЦУКА відбулися у Воррен на запрошення Української кредитової спілки “Будучність”, щоб одночасно відсвяткувати 50-ліття цієї установи. У п’ятницю пополудні делегатів привітали представники “Будучности”, новообраний голова дирекції Анатолій Мурга і виконавчий директор Андрій Якимович. Збори відкрив голова дирекції ЦУКА і президент Українсько-Американської Федеральної Кредитової Спілки (УАФКС) “Самопоміч” Богдан Ватраль. Учасників привітав президент Української Світової Кооперативної Ради і член дирекції УАФКС “Самопоміч” Ігор Ляшок. Слідували доповіді на теми, які цікавлять провідників кредитівок. Особливим гостем на зборах ЦУКА був Евген Чолій, президент Світового Конґресу Українців. Він виступив перед учасниками з доповіддю, в якій звернув увагу на розширення співпраці СКУ з міжнародними інституціями та урядами країн проживання української діяспори, зокрема в захисті основних прав і свобід українців. Пан Чолій похвалив працю ЦУКА, яка об’єднує та координує діяльність українських фінансових інституцій в Америці, дбаючи за їхнє зміцнення і розбудову, та сприяє відродженню і розширенню кооперативного руху в Україні. Опісля президент СКУ вручив грамоти Клюбу президента СКУ “за вагомий фінансовий внесок для підтримки діяльности СКУ” Федеральній Кредитовій Кооперативі “Самопоміч” Нью Йорк, Федеральній Кредитовій Кооперативі “Самопоміч” (Нью Джерсі) у Кліфтоні та Федеральній Кредитовій Кооперативі “СУМА” в Йонкерсі. В суботу 11-го червня проведено річні загальні збори ЦУКА. Присутні делегати прослухали звіти голови дирекції Богдана Ватраля і президента Орисі Бурдяк. На кінець 2010 року, активи шістнадцяти українських кредитових спілок – членів ЦУКА дорівнювали 2.432 мільярди дол., а резерви і нерозділені прибутки нараховували 368 мільйонів дол. Членські внески становили 2.052 мільярди дол. Видано 1.439 мільярдів дол. у позичках у 2010 році. 104,155 осіб є членами українських кредитових спілок у США, на 1056 менше, ніж минулого року. Треба підкреслити, що не зважаючи на рецесію, українські кредитівки пожертвували майже $4.4 мільйони дол. на громадські цілі, таким чином вказуючи, наскільки членство в українских кредитівках впливає на діяльність і ріст наших українських громад. Цьогорічний кооперативний календар, в котрому були зображені ілюстрації Петриківського розпису, сподобався членам кредитівок, які швидко розібрали весь тираж – около 32,000 календарів. В суботу вечером відбувся святковий бенкет-відзначення 50-ліття кредитівки “Будучність”. Між численними гістьми були член конґресу штату Мічіґан Леся Лис і мер міста Воррен Джеймс Фоутс. Від ЦУКА кредитівка “Будучність” отримала відзначення з нагоди золотого ювілею. Головну промову на бенкеті виголосив президент СКУ Евген Чолій, який у своєму слові підкреслив вагомість українського кооперативного руху такими словами: “Українські кредитові спілки є основною фінансовою опорою нашого громадського життя; тому закликаю всіх українців ставати їхніми членами та цим самим підтримати їхню стабільну діяльність у майбутньому і можливість жертвувати на різні цілі національного характеру”. Слідувала мистецька програма з виступами СУМівського танцювального ансамблю Детройту і Капелі Бандуристів ім. Тараса Шевченка, яких присутні обдарували гучними оплесками. Шановні провідники українських громадських організацій та фінансових установ! Дорогі пані і панове! Перш за все від імені Світового Конґресу Українців маю честь привітати з 50-літнім ювілеєм Українську Кредитову Спілку “Будучність”, яка вже півстоліття віддано служить інтересам своїх членів та місцевій українській громаді. За довгі роки своєї праці Кредитова Спілка “Будучність” виявилася як стабільна фінансова установа, що вміло оперує своїм капіталом та на сучасному рівні надає своїм членам різні необхідні види фінансових і кредитних послуг. У той же час Ваша кредитівка надає значну допомогу для розвитку українського громадського життя: підтримує рідні школи, молодечі організації, науково-культурні установи та різні заходи національного характеру. Важливим є також і те, що Ви дбаєте і про нашу духовну Батьківщину – Україну, жертвуючи на її розбудову значні кошти. Ваша кредитівка, будучи частиною фінансово-кредитної системи Америки, є членом Централі Українських Кооператив Америки, яка щойно відбула свої 30 ті Річні загальні збори. Я мав приємність взяти участь у цьому зібранні, де ознайомився з великою корисною працею, яку виконують українські кредитові спілки Америки. Хочу відзначити сумлінну діяльність Централі Українських Кооператив Америки, яка об’єднує та координує заходами українських фінансових інституцій на Вашому терені, сприяючи їх зміцненню та розбудові, а також докладає великих зусиль до відродження та розширення кооперативного руху в Україні. Хоча за фахом я юрист, діяльність українських кредитівок для мене дуже близька, оскільки я вже п’ятий рік є головою управи Української Народної Каси “Дежарден” у Монтреалі. А мій батько понад 40 років був задіяний в українському кооперативному русі, перебуваючи на постах голови, секретаря та управителя цієї кредитівки, а також заступника голови Української Кооперативної Ради Канади. Сьогодні, дивлячись у минуле, хочеться відзначити далекозорість наших попередників, які змогли заснувати та розбудувати на землях свого поселення фінансові кооперативи, що стали одним із важливих чинників українського згуртування. Цілком відповідаючи кооперативній ідеології та забезпечуючи економічні потреби, українські кредитові спілки діють під гаслом “Свій до свого по своє!” та виконують важливі завдання національного характеру. Одним із важливих чинників, який відрізняє українські кредитові спілки Америки від інших інституцій, є те, що вони є основною фінансовою опорою українських громадських структур, релігійних, культурно-освітніх, мистецьких, молодіжних, спортивних та інших інституцій, а також різних проектів на користь українському народу, що проживає в Україні. У 2010 р. українські кредитові спілки Америки пожертвували понад $4.3 мільйона на різні потреби Ваших українських громад та світового українства, за що їм нележить велике признання. Користуючись нагодою, хочу щиро подякувати тим українським кредитовим спілкам Америки, які щедро жертвують на потреби Світового Конґресу Українців, уможливлюючи виконання поставлених перед ним завдань та виявляючи свою підтримку його діяльності. 50-та річниця Української Кредитової Спілки “Будучність” співпадає з 20 ою річницею незалежності України. На жаль, сьогодні, на 20-му році своєї незалежності, Україна перебуває під серйозною загрозою: нинішні владні структури швидкими темпами підривають суверенітет України, перекреслюють перспективи її європейського розвитку, здійснюють наступ на здобутки демократії, зневажають її національні цінності та переписують історію. Як приклад можна назвати Харківську угоду, пропагування червоного прапора з серпом і молотом з метою повернення України до тоталітарного комуністичного режиму, порушення людських прав та основних свобод, цензуру слова, ігнорування української мови як державної, заперечення Голодомору та прославлення сталінізму. Щоб протистояти таким подіям, потрібні великі зусилля усієї української спільноти, яка повинна мати і людські ресурси, і відповідні фінанси. Тому, зважаючи на роль українських кредитових спілок у житті української спільноти на терені Америки, заохочую Вас, шановні присутні, мати подальше довір’я до українських фінансових інституцій, що запевнить їм стабільну діяльність в майбутньому та можливість жертвувати на різні цілі національного характеру. Я також закликаю Вас не ототожнювати Україну з різного роду антиукраїнськими силами, які перешкоджають її поступу вперед, та не відчужуватися від важливих для України і українства тем через постійні негативні та пригноблюючі новини. Бо наше збайдужіння - тільки на руку ворогам і противникам України. Пам’ятайте, що разом ми є великою силою. І якщо з Божим провидінням український народ подолав надзвичайно страшні випробування 20-го століття, він обов’язково подолає і теперішні кризи в Україні, об’єднавшись навколо національної ідеї – ідеї української державності.
